A boiler that keeps stopping is easy to read as a boiler on its way out. Usually it is the opposite.
Modern boilers are full of safety devices, and when one of them detects something wrong the boiler shuts down rather than carrying on regardless. The shutting down is the system working. What matters is finding out what it is reacting to.

First, Which Is It Doing?
There are two different behaviours here and they point in different directions.
Firing up and cutting out repeatedly, sometimes every few minutes, is called short cycling. The boiler is reaching a temperature it does not expect too quickly, then stopping, then starting again.
Stopping altogether and refusing to restart, usually with a code on the display, is a lockout. The boiler has decided it is not safe to run and needs resetting once the cause is dealt with.
Note which one yours is doing, and write down any code on the display before you touch anything. It is the single most useful piece of information you can give an engineer.
Low Water Pressure
This is the most common cause across the year, and the easiest to check.
Find the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. Cold, it should generally sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the needle is sitting near zero, the boiler will refuse to fire, because running with too little water in the system risks damaging it.
Topping the pressure back up is usually straightforward using the filling loop, and your boiler manual will show you how for your model. What matters more is the question underneath it: pressure that drops once is nothing, but pressure that keeps dropping means water is leaving the system somewhere. A Frozen Condensate Pipe
This one is seasonal, and in a cold snap it is behind a large share of breakdown calls.
Condensing boilers produce a small amount of acidic water as they run, which drains away through a plastic pipe. Where that pipe runs outside, a hard frost can freeze it. Once it is blocked, the condensate has nowhere to go, and the boiler shuts down to avoid backing up.
The tell is timing. If your boiler stopped overnight during a freeze, and there is a white or grey plastic pipe running out through an external wall, this is very likely your answer. Some boilers show a specific code for it.
It is one of the few faults a homeowner can reasonably deal with. Warm water poured slowly along the outside of the frozen section will usually clear it, working from the end nearest the boiler. Use warm water rather than boiling, which can crack the pipe, and never use a naked flame. Once it is flowing again the boiler will normally restart after a reset.
If the pipe is at height, or you cannot reach it safely, leave it. It is not worth a ladder in icy weather.
Poor Circulation Around the System
If water is not moving through the boiler quickly enough, the heat exchanger gets hotter than it should and the boiler cuts out to protect itself. This is the usual cause of short cycling.
Several things restrict circulation. Sludge and debris build up in older systems and narrow the pipework. The pump can weaken or fail. Valves can be closed, sometimes after work elsewhere in the house. Air trapped in the system does the same job as a blockage.
The clue is usually in the radiators. Cold patches at the bottom, radiators that never warm properly, or a system that has needed bleeding repeatedly all point this way. A power flush or system clean is often what resolves it, and it is a job worth doing properly rather than repeatedly treating the symptom.
The Room Thermostat
Worth ruling out because it costs nothing.
If your thermostat sits somewhere unrepresentative, above a radiator, in direct sun, or in a draughty hallway, it will read the wrong temperature and switch the boiler on and off more often than the house actually needs. A thermostat with failing batteries can do something similar.
It is not a boiler fault at all, but it produces behaviour that looks like one.
A Boiler That Is Simply Too Big
Occasionally the answer is that the boiler was oversized for the property when it was fitted.
An oversized boiler heats the system faster than the house can absorb it, reaches temperature, shuts down, cools, and starts again. It short cycles by design, which wastes gas and wears components faster.
There is no quick fix for this one, and it is a good argument for having any new boiler sized around the actual property rather than fitted to a standard specification.
What You Can Safely Check
- Write down the fault code before resetting anything
- Check the pressure gauge, and note whether you have topped it up recently
- In cold weather, check the condensate pipe for ice
- Feel the radiators for cold patches or ones that never get warm
- Check the room thermostat setting, position and batteries
What Not to Do
Do not keep resetting a boiler that locks out repeatedly. The reset button clears the fault code, not the fault, and a boiler locking out several times a day is telling you something that repeated resets will not resolve.
Do not remove the boiler casing. Working on gas appliances without Gas Safe registration is illegal as well as dangerous.

Getting It Sorted
Most of these faults are repairs rather than replacements, and several are cheap ones. A boiler that keeps cutting out is rarely a boiler that needs replacing, it is usually a boiler reacting to something else in the system.
What is worth avoiding is living with it. A boiler short cycling for months is burning more gas than it needs to and wearing out parts faster than it should, so the cost of ignoring it is real even when the house stays warm.
