What we see in Hook homes
Hook is a village that expanded considerably around its railway and the roads through it, so the housing runs from genuinely old cottages to estate building of the last few decades, with the surrounding hamlets adding older and more isolated property again.
On the older systems the recurring problem is what is inside the pipework rather than the pipework itself. Years of circulation leaves a sludge of corrosion debris that collects in the bottom of radiators and restricts flow. The symptoms are familiar: radiators cold at the bottom and warm at the top, a boiler that is noisier than it used to be, rooms that take far longer to come up to temperature than they should.
A power flush clears it, and fitting a magnetic filter afterwards keeps it from building back up. It is worth resolving before a new boiler goes in rather than after, because a modern boiler pushed to circulate dirty water will not last as well as it should, and most manufacturer warranties expect the system to have been cleaned properly.
Hook sits at the Hampshire end of our area, so it is worth checking with us first. We always come back to you either way.
FAQs
Common questions from Hook homeowners
Do you cover Hook and the surrounding villages?
Hook is towards the far edge of our Hampshire coverage, so please ask before assuming. Get in touch and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
My radiators are cold at the bottom but warm at the top. Why?
That is the classic sign of sludge: corrosion debris settling in the bottom of the radiator and restricting circulation. Cold at the top and warm at the bottom is usually trapped air instead, which is a different and much simpler fix. Worth telling us which one you have when you call.
What is a power flush and do we need one?
It is a thorough clean of the system, circulating water and cleaning agents at pressure to shift the debris that has built up inside the pipework and radiators. Not every system needs one. Where it is needed it restores circulation, and it is usually worth doing before a new boiler is fitted rather than afterwards, since most manufacturer warranties expect a clean system.
Will a magnetic filter help?
Yes, and we fit one as standard on a new installation. It catches the corrosion particles that a system inevitably produces before they can settle in radiators or reach the boiler. It needs emptying at the annual service, which is one of the things a service is for.
