What Sam wanted
Sam was building a rear extension with an open plan kitchen at the heart of it, and he wanted the kitchen warm underfoot without losing the walls to radiators. In a room that open, the wall space is usually spoken for before the heating is even considered.
He also wanted it to match the standard of the rest of the work going in, which ruled out anything that would end up looking like it had been added afterwards.
Adding to the system rather than replacing it
There was nothing wrong with the heating system Sam already had, so we retrofitted the underfloor heating onto it rather than starting again. That kept both the cost and the disruption down, which matters when there is already a build going on around you.
It runs on its own controls, so the extension can be heated separately from the rest of the house. An open plan kitchen tends to be used at different times of day to the bedrooms, and tying the two together would have meant heating one to suit the other.
Getting the levels right
The heating goes under the floor, and the floor had to finish level between the original house and the new extension. When that is out, you are left with a step or a threshold in exactly the place the room was meant to feel continuous.
We also set the pipework out to the kitchen plan rather than to the room, so none of it runs beneath the units. It is the sort of thing nobody thinks about until an appliance needs getting at, and by then it is too late to change. The whole job took two days on site.
This job also appears on our Wokingham heating page, alongside the other work we have done locally.
