New Boiler Installation

A Full Heating System in Crowthorne

Bernard was refurbishing the house, and the heating was one part of a much larger job. We fitted the boiler, cylinder, radiators and underfloor heating, and piped the bathrooms, working in stages across a few months around the other trades on site.

Bernard on the job

The brief

Bernard was refurbishing the house, and the heating was one part of a much larger job. He told us at the outset what he wanted from it: something efficient, something simple to live with, and something that looked right. Those three usually pull in the same direction, and knowing all of them before anything was specified made the decisions a good deal easier.

Because the heating sat inside a bigger build, the question was never only what to install. It was when each part of it could go in without getting in the way of everyone else working on the house.

Working around the build

We were on site in stages across a few months, coming back each time a part of the house was ready for us. That meant first fix while the floors were up and the walls were open, then returning for second fix once the building work around it had caught up.

Running a job that way takes more coordination than doing it in one go, but it keeps the heating from holding up the rest of the build, and it stops pipework being closed in before it is finished.

Changes along the way

Bernard changed his mind about a few things as the build took shape, which happens on most refurbishments and is far cheaper to accommodate while the floors are still up than once everything has been closed in.

Being on site in stages made that straightforward rather than awkward. Each time we came back we could take account of whatever had been decided since our last visit.

How it was left

The boiler, cylinder and expansion vessel all sit together in the plant room with the pipework run and insulated, the underfloor heating runs from its own manifold, and there are radiators in the rooms where radiators made more sense. The bathrooms were piped ready for the fit out that followed.

This job also appears on our Crowthorne heating page, alongside the other work we have done locally.
